Bespoke Projects
We take great pride in all our work and occasionally we’ll be asked to carryout building work that is out of the scope of what would usually be classed as ‘normal building projects’. This section of our website is dedicated to some of the one off projects we’re proud have been involved in.
In 2010 I was contacted by The Parish of Wraxall and Failand Church with a request to tender an estimate to custom build a children’s corner pew to help keep the children of adult attendees entertained during services.
Being a 14th century, Grade 1 listed building, the process was not simple! It took 3 years of meetings with different governing bodies discussing elements right down to the origin of the oak to be used for the pew.
Whilst the debates were being held about the children’s corner I was asked to carryout some of the day to day repairs that didn’t require such a stringent committee to agree their approval.
In those 2 years I carried out the majority of their building and maintenance works, mainly overseen by a historical architect to approve and inspect the work I carried out.
Finally, in 2012, the final design and plan for the children’s corner was agreed and I was proud to be chosen to create the vision.
The project, in essence, was fairly straight forward, but in reality not! The protocol was to remove an existing pew without damaging it and custom build a new U shaped pew with under-seat storage for children’s toys and games. It had to be constructed using European oak to blend in with the other pews and be of a similar design whilst remaining characteristically different from the existing furniture in order to differentiate the two so that future generations could establish the original from the additions!
Having completed the work in early 2013, the pew is now used weekly and is the home of many toys and games! We’ve also added 3 custom made notice boards in matching oak which really finish off the look of the children’s corner.
